Generations of Song: A Community Strengthening Project

Averill Summer, Fine Arts and Jean Calandra, Educational Outreach, INTERACT, and the University Village Assisted Living Care Unit.

Description: Communication between the older and younger generations has always been challenging, yet are less possible today because fewer opportunities present themselves for communication between the older and younger generations. Music and songs have been found to be a unifying force between generations. In this project, student members of INTERACT: Youth Arts Coalition interviewed and taped residents of the neighborhood's University Village Assisted Living Care Unit about the role music played in their lives. Songs reminiscent of the elders' era were compiled, arranged and performed by the Tampa Bay Children's Chorus. This process has resulted in the young people developing interviewing skills as well as empathy towards senior citizens. The seniors in turn had the opportunity to relate to young people, who they often see as threatening, in a controlled and positive environment.
