Increasing Sexual Responsibility Among Adolescent Males

Linda Raffaele and Pat Daniel, College of Education

Description: The Gender and Schooling Interest Group at USF, with the cooperation of a dozen community partners, implemented and evaluated a program to train teenage boys in responsible sexuality. The grant built on a curriculum developed in Greensboro, North Carolina, called “Wise Guys.” This curriculum is designed for boys 10 through 19 years of age, with the goal of decreasing teen pregnancy and dating violence. The USF team aimed to maximize their impact by providing training to staff from community groups who worked with young males, rather than through providing the training themselves. USF organized the training and evaluated the impact of the program on knowledge and attitudes of young males. Initial results are favorable both in terms of the impact on the youngsters, and the enthusiasm and response of the community groups who have used the curriculum.
